One Month

It's been one month today since my memaw was laid to rest.  She passed away on August 11, 2011.  In so many ways, it seems like that has been both a long time and not much time at all.  I do know that for me, it just doesn't seem real yet.  I have had many instances over the past few weeks when a particular memory of her would pop into my head...almost on a daily basis.  I feel blessed to have those memories, but it doesn't make the loss any easier.

Aside from the past 4 years, I spent the majority of my life either living on that hill right beside her or in her house with her.  The kids and I most recently lived with her for 6 weeks last fall during our transition between TX and OK.  Even though that is a lot of time and I'm very thankful that I was able to spend so much of it so close to her, I still feel like in so many ways it wasn't enough.  I mean 79 can be considered old to many people, I guess I just thought she would live longer??

Some of the thoughts/memories that I've had over the past few weeks

  • memaw and her tractor...that woman loved to get on her tractor and work.  I think a lot of times she would create something to move or mow over just because she enjoyed it so much.  When Dylan was a baby and we lived next door, he would always know when she cranked it up and want to go outside so he could ride it with her.
  • garage sales....you see, my memaw, she was ALWAYS planning to have a garage sale.  She loved having them and was constantly scoping out my garbage to see if I had anything worthy of her keeping to sell in her garage sale.  Seriously.
  • flowers...she loved her flowers and working in her yard.  I have a vision of her in her blue work pants, a plaid button up shirt and a wet rag around her neck working in the yard.  She always had that wet rag around her neck.
  • laundry...I will never forget memaw telling me on multiple occasions that I was going to burn the house down because I forgot to clean the lint tray out of the dryer.
  • hair color...when I lived with her last fall, she recruited me to color her hair.  I got so tickled at her giving me "instructions" about which roller to use and how to part it.  She was bossing me around, but I remember thinking how glad I was that I was able to be there and help her.
  • knock knock....Jeremy and I joked for the longest that memaw's way of knocking was to knock on the door and say "knock knock" as she was opening it instead of waiting for us to answer it....I would give ANYTHING for her to "knock" on my door one last time :(
I'm sure there are a lot more, these are just ones that stuck out in my mind and I wanted to capture so I won't forget.

Sydni has been talking a lot about memaw and papaw (and Jake, our chocolate lab).  It makes me both happy and sad to hear her talk so freely about them.  I know she is sad, but I wouldn't trade anything for the memories that she has of her great-grandmother and the years she got to spend with her.

If you are reading this and you still have your grandparent(s) still living, be assured that you are never guaranteed tomorrow and make sure you tell them that you love them and are blessed to have had so much time with them.  My memaw was my last living grandparent and she was the one I was closest to.  As I talk to my mom on pretty much a daily basis, my heart hurts for her as I know she struggles to make it through some days and sometimes sounds like some of the life has gone out of her.  I can't imagine what she is feeling and hope that I have a lot more years with MY mom before she meets her Maker.  I feel so blessed to be a part of such a great family and to have the privilege to call Betty Metcalf my "memaw".

Til next time.....

Dust Bunnies????

They must be a few inches thick cuz this blog has been severely neglected!!  In an effort to to rekindle this thing and keep the family updated on a more consistent basis, I'm gonna try REAL hard to update regularly.

So....how the heck do I sum up what's been going on in our lives since January?!?!  Let's just say a LOT and leave it at that, k?  No really, a LOT...

We are loving living in The Woodlands so far!!  The kids are about to start their 4th week of school and are doing great :)  They switch classes here and that was something new for them, but so far so good!  The elementary school here only goes to 4th grade, so Sydni will go to the intermediate school next year.  Jeremy finished up his 2nd week of work here and likes it so far.  His office building is SUPER nice, they have a cafeteria, fitness center and plans for a daycare.  He hasn't had too much traffic as of yet, takes him about 20-30 min from our apartment.

I started working this past Thursday and let me tell ya, I was SO ready!  First, I don't do idle time very well.  Once the kids went back to school I found myself just sitting on the couch, talking to Frank and Lulu (can you say crazy cat/dog lady?!?).  Anyway, I have been to 7 interviews since we moved here a month ago.  Three of them were for one job (the one I got).  I told Jeremy that I was exhausted from the whole job searching process and was just tired of talking about myself.  I wanted to walk in and say, "here's my resume, let me know if you have any questions"....if I don't hear "so tell me about yourself and your work history" again for a long time, I will be a happy girl!!

I am training with the girl I am replacing until this next Thursday and so far I think I am gonna LOVE this job!  It's very similar to what I did at Coke.  My title is Regional HR Mgr and I support the South region.  The company (FleetPride) manufacture and distribute heavy duty truck and trailer parts.  The majority of the workforce are men.  So South region = good 'ol boy :)  I was listening in to some conference calls and was cracking up at the accents on some of these guys!!  Good thing they didn't give me the northwest or midwest region, huh??  Could you imagine the fun they would have had at my expense over my accent??  Seriously.

Many folks have asked us how apartment life is...well, it's apartment life!  So far it hasn't been bad, but it definitely isn't owning your own house!  Living here for a year will enable us to buy our forever home next summer, so it's a small sacrifice to make in our opinion!

What's up for next week?  Dylan is playing fall baseball and Jeremy is coaching.  He starts practice next week and has his first game on the 24th (I think?).  Sydni is starting gymnastics next week also, so the insanity begins again!  Wouldn't have it any other way!!

No pics for this post, but maybe later in the week I will have some updated ones!

**On a side note, as we celebrate the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, I have been answering a lot of questions from the kids about what happened and we have watched some specials on TV as well.  I told Sydni that she was almost done cooking in my belly when it happened and Dylan wasn't even thought of.  I'm sure to those that lost family members these past 10 years have been very difficult and our thoughts and prayers are with them!!

Isn't it Amazing....

Hello!  Hope everyone had a great New Year's!  I know we sure did!  I thought of this blog post last night after I got out of the shower and was getting ready for bed....

-isn't it amazing how MUCH having babies can mess with your body?  I mean really, the stretch marks, saggy boobs (just keeping real folks), change in hair/skin, etc is most DEFINITELY not in "What To Expect When You are Expecting".  At least it wasn't in my copy....

-isn't it amazing how fast a clean house can become a complete DISASTER thanks to having kids and all their toys/stuff/junk

-isn't it amazing how different life changes when you go from being a family of 2 to 3 or more??  WOAH!  Eating out takes on a whole new meaning....especially now that my kids can eat an adult meal now!!

-isn't it amazing how you blink your eyes and they have outgrown their clothes & shoes and you just bought them new stuff like 2 months ago??

-isn't it amazing how you sit down on the couch for the first time that day only to hear, "MOOOOOM".  You get up, go to their room, only for them to say, "I forgot my question!!"  *sigh*

-isn't it amazing how QUIET it is riding in the car after dropping the kids off at school.  You yearn for silence, then when you have it, it's uncomfortable?  Go figure!

I could go on and on and on, but I won't.

As I went in to check on the kids like I do every night, I was struck with these thoughts:

-isn't it amazing that these precious babies are M.I.N.E.?!?!!

-isn't it amazing that they love me unconditionally and know that love is returned??

-isn't it amazing that GOD blessed me with such beautiful children to teach me so many life lessons??

-isn't it amazing how quickly we can take the most important people in our lives for granted??

So really, isn't it amazing how even though they drive me completely batty sometimes, I wouldn't trade one.single.stretch mark for the miracles I was lucky enough to have??

I was going through some old pictures today and wanted to share some from when the kids were little...definitely a trip down memory lane for me.  That blink of an eye and they go from toddling around to half-grown in an instant!

I had a TON more of Sydni and not so many of Dylan...he went through a phase where this was all I got when I tried to take pictures of him : /

And lastly, this picture is so SWEET!!  My baby loving on his babies..goes by WAY too fast :(

Wrapping up...holiday update!

Wow, I can't believe it's NYE?!?!  This month has flown by in so many aspects and some it seems it has been at a snail crawl!  Our family had a GREAT Christmas this year :)

The kids and I headed for TX on Sunday before Christmas!  I had good intentions of seeing lots of people during the week we were there, but unfortunately that didn't happen :(  (Ashley, I'm sorry :*( )  We were busy the entire week!!  Between helping my mom get the rest of her Christmas stuff done, visiting with my grandmother and other family, it seemed like Christmas Eve was here before I knew it!

With us having such large families, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are always busy!  Christmas Eve we started out at my dad's house, then went to my sister-in-law's house to exchange gifts with Jeremy's immediate family.  THEN we went to Jeremy's aunt's house and celebrated with my mother-in-laws family!  So much fun and enjoyed getting to visit with everyone!

Christmas Eve night we stayed at my mom's house.  The kids have been BEYOND excited about Santa visiting this year!  The only thing they have consistently asked for has been a wii.  To the point that they didn't care if they got anything else, as long as they got a wii!  Well, Santa being the jolly ol fellow that he is, brought the kids (and me and Jeremy) a wii!!!  My mom said she met Sydni coming down the hallway when she first woke up and she had already been in the living room...she said her eyes were as big as saucers telling her that "Santa brought us a wii NiNi~!!!!"  So cute :)  We opened presents just from us and then my brother and sister-in-law and their boys came and we opened presents again!  Lots of presents opening went on this year!  My mom totally spoiled all of us (even the big kids)!  It's funny to me that I was SUPER excited about my gifts this year and they were new pots and pans and dishes!!  10 years ago, I would have been like, "you have got to be kidding me, who wants household stuff as a gift?!?!?"  Now at 31, I'm loving it :)

Christmas Day afternoon we went to my Memaw's for the Metcalf celebration!  I enjoyed visiting with family and I know my kids had fun playing with cousins!  The gift game was fun as usual..so excited I got what I brought :)

We headed back home around lunch time on Sunday....we were all exhausted at that point and just wanted to sleep in our own beds!

This week has been spent being lazy, playing LOTS and LOTS of wii, playing board games, laundry and some outside time on Wednesday and Thursday since it was nice.  I'm not gonna lie, I am READY for the kids to go back to school on Monday!  Jeremy is actually off on Monday, so we will have the day to ourselves!  Thinking about going to see Little Fockers....

I was bad this year and didn't take many pics...actually not any at all of the gift opening :(  Here are some random pics tho of Dylan shooting his bow that he got, the kids skating (both got rollerblades for Christmas and were so excited to try them out!), and last some pics of our new house!  Warning, not everything in the house is finished, no base boards, etc and not all of my decor is exactly where I want it, but it's 75% done I'd say!

We are leaving this afternoon to go to Oklahoma City to stay with some friends (okay let's face, the ONLY friends we have in this state : /) tonight!  SOOOOO looking forward to that!!

It's gonna be COOOOOOLLLD this weekend, so we may not be doing much at all but hanging out in front of the fire!

**Say a prayer for me, I had 2 interviews this week and have a 2nd interview with one of the places next week!!  I'm hopeful that I will get an offer cuz momma needs a j-o-b like yesterday!!

Okay, now for the pics:

Our new town and Christmas cookies

Since my last post was kind of a whirl-wind of updates, I thought I'd give a little more details about this new town that we call home!  Jeremy says Texas will always be home and while I agree, I'm good with calling Oklahoma our new "home" for now...

Here's some factual data about Duncan, OK if you are interested...I'll give you the low-down!  Although the population of Duncan is around 23k vs Lindale's 5k or so, it is a very old town.  There are no chain restaurants and no chain department stores...except Wal-Mart!  You know I couldn't live in a town that doesn't have a WM!!  Luckily we are close to it since I've been there EVERY day since we moved.  I told Jeremy the other day that I'm actually TIRED of going at this point :/  If I was going to buy stuff I want in stead of things we need it would be different...I think.

Anyway, I would say this town is about 10 years behind in their way of life.  There's not much that is on-line and most everything has to be done in person.  The school has been the biggest adjustment for me so far.  There are 4 elementary schools in the town and they are all k-5.  I'm super excited that they are on the same campus for once!!  There are about 400 kids per school and each grade has 3 classes.  Definitely a lot smaller scale than what the kids are used to!  The schools here are what they call "neighborhood" schools.  They have a bike rack and kids actually RIDE their bikes to school!?!?  Can you TX folks believe that??  I'm gonna take a pic and post on here!  There are no car tags, as long as their teacher recognizes you, you are good to go.  The car line is similar to Lindale's, but after the first 2 days I watched other parents and now I just park on a side street and walk up to get them.  They have made friends super fast and seem to be adjusting well!

I told someone today that I've enjoyed being off and getting the house situated and making sure the kids got adjusted and doing all the things required when moving to a different state (car insurance, registering vehicle, etc!)  However, momma is ready to find some friends and is anxiously looking for a j-o-b!!  It's sooooo weird to go in places and not know a SINGLE soul!  I almost want to just say, "Hi I'm new, anyone wanna be my friend??"  LOL

In other exciting news, momma got a new vehicle!!!  Beyond excited and thankful :)  It's a 2008 Ford Expedition!  I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them for y'all!  I'm like a 2 year old...I was plain giddy the other day walking out of Wal-Mart and opening the back door with my remote!!

Today the kids and I baked some Christmas cookies.  Other than their shapes, there is not much that's original about them, but they had fun and that's all that matters, right??  I keep telling myself that as I clean up their mess...and I did the floors today so I'm way anal about stuff getting on them.  Did I mention that my kids are as messy as they were when they were toddlers eating in a high chair???  I thought that would get better with age, but no such luck!

Here's some pics of our cookies :)

Flour, flour everywhere!!!!

Me and my girl :)

And the finished product :)  Not typical, but it worked for them!!

Tomorrow I will have pics of the downtown area (soooo neat) and my new ride!  Hope everyone is enjoying my blog :)
